- Immigration Here & There - What is it ? -

A product of the Medill News Service, ImmHT provides a cross-national perspective on immigration, enhancing exposure to world affairs for Americans, providing public space to air compelling stories about diaspora populations, and serving as a repository of facts and figures in an arena of often misleading information.

The site, based at Northwestern Univesity's Medill School of Journalism, is directed by Jack Doppelt and has been made possible through the financial support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

The ImmHT site features:
Feature stories - Trend stories reported by Medill News Service journalists on the phenomenon of cross-national migration, for readers interested in making connections between the 200 million people worldwide, and 34 million people in the United States alone, who live in countries other than where they were born.

Profiles - Personal stories of individuals experiencing the dramatic disruptions of migrating across national borders.

Interaction and Dialogue - Personal accounts by readers and dialogue among immigrants and between immigration groups to discover parallel experiences and appreciate emotional differences.

Breaking News - The day's news stories about immigration generated by Google, dynamically scrolled across the top of the screen and changing throughout the day.

Quotables - Inspirational quotes about migration selected from literature, the arts, and pop culture, with one featured daily as the Quote of the Day.

Here - Facts and figures on immigration and diaspora populations in the U.S. that may surprise you or give you pause.

As we launch the site in 2006, we seek multiple partnerships to enable us to report dynamically and accurately on international migration, with our readers to determine what stories and information are most compelling, with immigrants and immigrant service groups to lead us to stories worth documenting and to initiate a dialogue among and between migrating populations, with immigration policy experts to ensure that we don't misrepresent trends, and with journalism schools around the world to recruit young reporters eager to dig into an under-reported phenomenon that is re-defining the international landscape for the 21st century.

Jack Doppelt is a professor at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism and the director of Medill's graduate global journalism program. He is also the editor and publisher of On the Docket (a web site on the U.S. Supreme Court), and a faculty associate at Northwestern's Institute for Policy Research. At Medill, he has served as both Acting Dean and Associate Dean.

In Medill's global journalism program, Medill graduate students combine an intensive front-loaded seminar series in Paris with a faculty-supervised 10-week residency program at primarily English-language news organizations and publications around the world.

A graduate of Grinnell College and the University of Chicago Law School, Doppelt clerked for Illinois Supreme Court Justice Thomas J. Moran before becoming an investigative reporter and news producer. As an investigative journalist for the Better Government Association and WBBM-Newsradio in Chicago, he broke stories on court corruption, housing dangers and governmental conflicts of interest.

Florent Blanc is a PhD candidate in the Political Science Department at Northwestern University and the Institut d'Etudes Politiques of Paris. He serves as an assistant for the Immigration Here & There project.
Specialized in international relations and security, Florent Blanc's dissertation revolves around post-9/11 security policies in the US.
A graduate from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques of Grenoble (France) and Institut d'Etudes Politiques of Paris, Florent Blanc also studied at University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada) and University of Kent at Canterbury (UK).
