Smuggling - $6,000 from El Salvador to LA (El Paso Times, May 30, 2006)
An illegal immigrant pays approximately $4,300 to get from El Salvador to a Mexican border town, $300 to cross the border and another $1,400 to get from El Paso to Los Angeles (El Paso Times, May 30, 2006) "Border Patrol officials warned that using a smuggler does not make crossing safer. Smugglers have robbed, assaulted and abandoned their customers and slipped them stimulants that keep them awake but dehydrated. Many of the 25 deaths recorded so far this year in the El Paso sector and many of the 400 rescues involved migrants being abandoned by their smuggler".
